Less is more
Every extra field is more work for your visitor. Ask only for what you really need.
A form is a small chore you ask of someone. Each field, each unclear word and each surprise is a reason to give up, and people do: long forms lose visitors at every step.
So trim first, then make what's left easy to scan. And never ask for the same thing twice: if step 1 already has the address, don't make step 3 ask for it again. WCAG 2.2 even has a rule for that, 3.3.7 Redundant Entry.
- Ask only what you really need: every field lowers the chance people finish.
- One column, top to bottom, with each label above its field.
- Mark optional (or required) fields clearly and consistently.
- Name the main button after what it does: “Create account”, not “Submit”.
