Images are the heaviest load
On most pages, images outweigh everything else in the cart. Pick the right format for each job.
On a typical page, images make up more bytes than all the HTML, CSS and JavaScript together. Choosing the right format is often the biggest single win.
Lossy formats drop detail you won't notice; tune the quality until it looks right, not higher. Lossless formats keep every pixel, which costs a lot for photos.
- AVIF: the best compression for photos, often well below WebP.
- WebP: supported everywhere modern, much smaller than JPEG.
- JPEG: the universal fallback for photos.
- PNG: lossless, with transparency. Heavy for photos.
- SVG: vector: icons and logos that stay sharp at any size.
