Ship less, ship smart
The lightest load reaches the forge fastest. Strip it, squeeze it, and send it once.
Every byte has to travel over the network before the browser can use it. Two cheap wins shrink text files a lot.
- Minify: build tools strip whitespace and comments and shorten names in CSS and JavaScript.
- Compress: the server squeezes text files on the way out with Brotli (
Content-Encoding: br) or gzip. Brotli usually compresses text better, and text often shrinks by 70% or more. - Compression works on text: HTML, CSS, JS, JSON, SVG. JPEG, PNG, WebP and WOFF2 are already compressed: squeezing them again wastes CPU.
